International Seaweed Symposium

Yes….. there is such a thing! And in 2025, this was held on Vancouver Island in Canada. Love Rimuirmu was there presenting on their research into community monitoring and natural fibres.

The team had an inspiring time immersing themselves in the latest research, innovations, funding opportunities, and Indigenous perspectives in the world of seaweed and marine restoration. It was also a fantastic chance to reconnect with old friends and make new connections within the global kelp restoration community.

A special highlight of the trip was seeing members of our team on the international stage. Hannah and Maia both presented in the restoration space. Hannah shared insights on integrating breath-hold diving techniques into a low-cost, community-based methodology for kelp restoration, while Maia spoke about the use of natural fibres in restoration practices. Both talks were very well received, sparking plenty of interest and meaningful conversations.

Outside the conference, the team made the most of their time on Vancouver Island. Over the weekends, they went scuba diving, hiked in the mountains, explored tide pools, braved cold water dips, searched for bears (and spotted one!), and sampled plenty of delicious local food. It was a perfect mix of work, adventure, and connection to nature.

All in all, it was an amazing trip filled with learning, sharing, and growing connections across the global seaweed science and restoration community.
