 About the Aerial Image

The aerial view provides a different perspective on our coastal kelp forest: The land is barren and the underwater forest are standing thick and healthy. This is only a snapshot in time and parts of this kelp forest have been lost already and are now barren rock or turf’ ”

Citizen scientists from the Wellington Underwater Club started documenting the giant kelp forest at Kau Bay Point at the northern tip of the Miramar Peninsula in 2016. Large brown seaweed is in decline at this site and large areas of seaweed forests have changed into barren rock or turf with stands of invasive Undaria.
